GIZ through the Indobus program is providing ongoing technical input for a BRT system in the South Sulawesi provincial capital Makassar. As of August 2022 the Makassar BRT is anticipated to receive EIB financing but is still subject to city-level approval processes and is not yet confirmed for implementation. The 30.2km Makassar BRT corridors include 6km of elevated BRT-only roads and are proposed to be served by 15 BRT routes using 43 BRT stations (42 in BRT corridors and one at the airport) and 133 off-corridor bus stops to be used by BRT routes. 123km of roads in Makassar will be covered by BRT services including a nearly 1km transit mall section along the coastal Pantai Losari to be combined with urban revitalization measures and coastal area traffic reorganization.

Makassar is a major provincial capital and Far East Mobility was the technical lead on the BRT design and carried out the operational planning for GOPA and GIZ in 2021 as part of the project Feasibility Study (FS). The project in 2022 involves intermittent input follow-up BRT planning and design building on the FS. Major work areas include surveys and data collection, BRT operational planning (especially the minibus or angkot sector impacts), capacity building, traffic impacts, and modal integration planning and design.

Following from the Pre-Feasibility Study in 2019 and 2020, GIZ through the Indobus program is preparing a BRT Feasibility Study in Makassar, covering the major east-west and north-south corridors of the city as well as the revitalization of the coastal 'Losari Beach' corridor.

Far East Mobility provided 5 members of an expert pool of local and international experts and led the technical planning and design of the BRT system guided by GIZ's Indobus program team. This included the following areas:

  1. BRT Service Plan formulation, including routes, fleet requirements, bus sizes, bus frequencies throughout the day and year, route adjustments to non-BRT routes, and other aspects;
  2. BRT Station Planning and Design;
  3. Modal Integration Plan;
  4. Parking Plan;
  5. NMT Improvements;
  6. Intersection design and configuration;
  7. Traffic Impact Analysis;
  8. Other aspects, including preparing reporting inputs on all these topics, and managing a survey program to collect related information.

Far East Mobility also led the presentation of the project proposals at the major stakeholder consultation presentations.
