Project Name: Addis Ababa BRT Review and Re-design

Duration
May 2022 to February 2023
Client
Agence Française de Développement
Project Features
A BRT corridor between Wingate and Jemo has been under planning and design in Addis Ababa for more than 5 years with engineering design completed in 2019. However, changes to the BRT corridor, stations and operation are considered necessary and Far East Mobility has proposed a revised first phase corridor concept between Piazza and Jemo. (The second phase will be between Wingate and Piazza.)
Far East Mobility Role

Far East Mobility reviewed the BRT corridor selection, service plan, station design, depot design, intersection proposals, station access and other aspects of the plans prepared in 2019 and is preparing major revisions to all areas of the project to address planning and design issues and reformulate the BRT corridors, stations, intersections and operations to ensure high-capacity performance at good operating speeds. BRT stations are being revised to ensure both high capacity operation and the ability to accommodate existing right-side-door only buses.

The Addis Ababa BRT planning includes an intensive 6-week survey program in August and September 2022 identifying current routes and demand, traffic counts and on-bus boarding and alighting and bus speed via handheld GPS, drone imagery of the BRT corridor, a revised BRT corridor preliminary design, a BRT service plan, and detailed cost estimates being prepared with a local engineering firm.

Far East Mobility will also provide the operating, cost and demand related inputs to financial modelling being carried out by other consultants.
